| And the US has forces in many of those areas |

as well. Not ALL the forces are tied up in Afghanistan and Iraq. They contribute just like any of the other countries stationed there do.
I certainly wouldn't argue US forces are at the same levels they were in those areas before .af and .iq invasions (they may well be, but I doubt it), but we're still putting manpower and resources into non-af and iq arenas just like you guys are.
The question is: How many of those UN missions have been even as successful as the US's failure in Iraq? Have any of those missions resulted in any sort of a change in Govt? Or even offered the chance of recovery Iraq does? what about infrastructure? Has the UN created new infrastructure in those places on the level the US is currently doing in Iraq? (and I'm talking specifically about UN and related UN NGO's. Private groups don't count).
Personally, I'm damn tired of the US even *trying* to be the babysitter of the world. That's *supposed* to be the UN's job. Had the UN been doing what it was supposed to (esp in light of all the kickback issues we've been having of late with the Oil-For-Food program), the US may never have gone into Iraq. We just got tired of waiting for *Something* to be done after 12 years of Saddam screwing us and the UN around.
Individual countries (any of them) shouldn't HAVE to do this sort of thing. That's why we have a group like the UN. Sadly, the only really good thing about the UN these days are the NGO's (UNESCO, etc). The Gen Assembly is a bloody debate club that is FAR more interested in keeping its nose clean than looking after it's member nations, and many of those individual member nations are more interested in securing their own interests VIA the UN than they are in trying to make other member countries secure and safe.
