It seems to me that our departure before some sort of "stable" (or as much as can be expected) government is in place would likely lead to a backslide into the violent seizing of power and regression to theocracy. Given the bitter Shiite vs Sunni conflict, that situation could get horrifying very fast. Am I convinced that we're avoiding that? Not entirely. But without our presence, I don't know that anything would prevent it.
