that it just has not been widely publicised as you have said. I know of at least two. I also know that my friends in the military greatly appreciated it when he flew to Iraq and visited them there and expressed his sadness over the losses in life.
As for the CEO, the point about not being able to do his job for $period_of_time still stands. Even in your example let us say there were 2,000 people to fire and he spent 30 minutes of an 8 hour day with each one you would only be able to see 16 people a day, if you did not break for lunch. If my math is correct that means it would take 125 days to see all of them. Would you want for the CEO of a company, let alone the president to be tied up for *4 months* not being able to do his job? that is a LOT of time spent talking to people who do not know him except as the "CEO who is firing them." Wouldn't you rather talk to your boss and his boss that you at least know and have dealt with in the past? I know that it would mean more to me to deal with a boss/friend than a person I didn't know doing it.
Part of exactly what you are talking about is to visit people both serving and the relatives and comrades in arms of those that are serving both living and dead. I also consider the units that the soldiers are serving in to be "family" as well. Many times the soldiers spend more time with their units than they do with their family. When you spend 6 months in a combat situation with your unit there are bonds that are made there that are very much like family if not stronger in some cases because you have to trust your life to those people. |
