When might we see US leave Iraq? by Peace_man 2006-11-19 12:55:59
Some cartoonists say 'when H4 freezes over'. Other people are more optimistic. Democrats in Congress are eager to hear the plan, but their Republican counterparts don't want to put that kind of pressure on the government.

I think the situation is very similar to England's presence in Northern Ireland - and we all know how long that situation took to get resolved. What? It's not resolved yet? I thought peace had broken out in Ireland? Oh well, I guess now we have a better idea how long the US will stay in Iraq:-(

In order for power to be handed over, a new made-in-Iraq government has to be installed, and enough police and military forces have to be trained and equipped to support it. Of course, in order for a US-made Iraqi government to be accepted, the entire process must be entirely fair and transparent. Otherwise we will just have a perpetual civil war in Iraq, with the US supporting one faction. Which of course is NOT desirable in the long run - a continued US military presence in the Middle East is a sure irritant to militant muslims and cannot produce peace for the US.

Possibly this is something that cannot have a good solution. And any Republican administration must by necessity support a continuation of the war in Iraq, or discredit itself by having to admit that the attack was a bad idea in the first place, because nothing good could possibly come from it.
