Talk to the people actually doing the work. Talk to the business owners. Get a good understanding of what exactly needs to be done (business objectives) and how it is currently done (business processes). Then write an application that makes everything easier and faster. Or realize that computer assistance is not appropriate and cancel the project.

But that would take real understanding of a business - something that even their owners rarely have.
