It was the sudden realization that although a database may seem like the best way to store the data I'm working with, I'll be old and grey before I get the wretched thing to do what I want. This is partially due to some extremely poor decisions made on the part of people who made the tools I'm trying to beat into doing the job, and partially due to a lack of knowledge on my part. I'm starting to see why DBAs earn so much, because I wouldn't put up with their jobs for anything.
