PROBLEM: Things don't work. by LionsPhil 2005-08-16 08:34:18
SOLUTION (generic corporate): Make another generation of 'products' with more shiny interfaces and incomplete features to distract the users from the fact that they still can't actually get trivial tasks done without going bald.

SOLUTION (open source): Write 32,768 seperate projects (half of which fork at least once) all of which get one point of the design or implementation almost perfect but otherwise are incomplete or fundamentally broken.

SOLUTION (Sun): Add more abstraction layers until not only can a possible solution to /this/ problem be implemented, but a solution to /any/ problem. Fail to actually write a complete implementation due to the fact that there is only finite time availible to do so.

SOLUTION (academia): Come up with far-fetched and infeasible fixes, usually involving technologies which read like the introduction to bad sci-fi novels. Rant bitterly about "missing the point" when someone implements with a cut-down version of the solution which actually works.
