actors and memorizing lines by dennismv2005-08-14 17:04:38
Theater: Yes, Film: No. by RetiQlum2 2005-08-14 17:29:29
Lines have to be memorized in theater as the actors need to be able to do the entire play, with no re-takes or pauses for setting up the next shot. They also need to do it many, many times in front of the audience (at least for a long-running show.)

For movies and television the actors only do the lines a few times, temporarily memorizing a scene and performing it for a few takes. Since the scenes are not usually even shot in order, and then they learn new scripts for the next film.

It's not really that hard: even in theatre, the lines are forgotten soon after the show closes; it's not like they are remembered forever.
