"Disagree with this: If the over-$400 billion spent on the military was instead put into research of a peaceful nature such as energy independence and finding cures for intractable diseases, we would be MUCH further along with solving those problems. "

Right, well, "no duh" as they say. It goes without saying that if you spent the mony researching something, then you'll be much further along in solving THAT problem.

On the other hand, we'd have a whackload of new problems to worry about. Such as, for instance, having to goose-step on our way to the convinience store, and praise the Fuhrer on an hourly basis. Which would then make it much harder to do any research into "research of a peaceful nature".

Like I said, get real. We don't live in a perfect world, and your way of thinking won't make it any better. Expecting civilized nations to disarm while the rest of the world carries on with business as usual is a concept so insane and suicidal that...well, the old theory is that if one man goes too far left, and one goes too far right, they'll eventually meet in the center. I guess that's true, since both the right-wing fanatics, and the left-wing fanatics are incapable of making any sort of rational observations, judgements, or decisions. If you're incapable of understanding why it's impossible for western militaries to disarm then there really isn't much I can say to you.
