"The U.S. is not the cops for the planet. Get together a non-nationalistic, non-jingoistic well-equipped and determined multi-national force to keep EVERYBODY honest and in their own back yard. You want a military of your own? Fine. For every dollar, ruble, or dinar you spend on yours, you send two more to the UN for the UN forces. Spend less on war-making, owe less for peacekeeping."

And who's going to enforce it? More importantly, what country will be insane enough to agree to it? Cut the budget of your own military in order to fund a force you don't control? You'd have to be nuts to even think about it for more than a few seconds. The fact of the matter is that the US IS the "world police" for the moment. NATO as a whole fills that role, but the US obviously has the controlling share of NATO. The UN as a world body is next to useless these days. The problem isn't that there's corruption, the problem is that the entire concept is flawed. You cannot form a world body in which every fascist regime and tin-pot dictator hold the same moral standing as legitemate democracies; at least, not if you expect it to fullfil any sort of humanitarian role. The day the UN appointed Lybia to head the human rights comission is the day I gave up all hope for it.
