(RANT): One would think I'd learn to not go up by shorty82 2005-08-09 11:58:00
to the central housing office as every time I do I leave mad, or at least annoyed.

I went up there the other week to find out where the summer hall director (HD) was at. Later that day there was a going away party for him and some other upper staff that were leaving housing. Hewas flying out early the next morning and I wanted to say "good bye".

The thing that made me mad is that EVERYBODY else that works for Housing was invited to this party, except the Student Assistants (SAs). They even closed down Central Housing for the party! Does it matter that we SAs worked with the man for the whole summer? Does it matter that we too are employees of Housing? NO!!! When I was up there I found out that they decided not to invite SAs. The lady (she's an Residence Life Coordinator (RLC, the HDs' boss)) knew I was not happy when I left.

We SAs are always being ignored and left out by Housing. I know that the administrators go to the RA (Resident Assistance) banquet at the end of the school year and to some of their meetings and training sessions. My Area Office Manager (AOM) (who was also invited to the party) and the girl that was pretty much our point of contact in Housing over the summer both tried the whole summer to get the administrators to come to one of our SA meetings and they never came. I have no clue who the heck my employers are!

All the other staff have also been given Housing t-shirts, but not SAs!

In my opinion being an SA is a very important job. We are responsible for the security of the building we work in. If a non-resident got in and caused trouble it would be the SA's butt on the line.

I'd complain to Housing but I'm afraid I'd lose my job. I'm pretty sure there is something in my contract saying that if I complain they can fire me. (I know of RAs who were fired for complaining about where they were assigned.)

Just now I went up there to find out when I'll be getting a roommate. I know that it'll be either the 12th or 17th of this month. If they stayed for Break Housing they'll move in on the 12th, otherwise they'll move in on the 17th. They told me they didn't know, yet all they would have to do is check to see if they stayed for Break, if they did it'll be the 12th, if not it'll be the 17th.

Central Housing is full of idiots. They make some very stupid decisions. The staff in the individual residence halls are all great. The SAs, the RAs, the HDs, the Housing Maintenenance staff, and the janitors are all great, nice people. It is central that is made up of idiots. As long as they pay me on time I'm usually happy with them, because I have so little to do with them.
