I saw a rather interesting documentary a few weeks back that drew a rather interesting line of events from 50 years back:
In the early 1950ies, the Iranians were getting annoyed that the British were taking a lot of the profits from the Iranian oil fields and demamded to get a bigger cut of the money. The Americans helped the Shah get back on the throne in -53, until he was deposed by Khomeini and friends in -79.
Khomeini then attacked Iraq in 1980, and the American government, worried that the fundamentalist Islamic form of government would spread to Iraq, supported Saddam with weapons of various types (including stuff like anthrax). He was a good friend of the American government until he invaded Kuwait in 1990.
The US has bullied other countries, in many different places, for the last 100 years or so, and is pretty much directly at fault for the current mess in Iraq.
