Say what you will, the US does not simply roll its military over the border to occupy neighbors for the heck of it (okay, let's just forget Central American politics about 90 years back for the moment).
Saddam decides to waltz into Kuwait. Gulf War I ensues. UN resolutions are handed down. Saddam disregards resolutions, the uncertainty of the situation leads us to think that it's not safe to let him stay in power, yet the UN doesn't have the brass to enforce its own resolutions.
"Not being hasty" means letting UN functionaries line their pockets further until Saddam had the resources to tangle with another neighbor. And then, MAYBE bring the UN forces into the mess.
If you're going to use schoolyard images, try this one. Europe is the "cool clique" who is usually in bed with the football goons/backstabbing cheerleaders. The football goons represent the oil tyrants and dicators.
The US is the less popular, less sophisticated schmuck who, if s/he tried doing half the crap that the "cool clique" gets away with, would be landed with dentention or suspension in a nanosecond. The schmuck may be big, simple and clumsy, but he knows that the cool kids simply have everyone snowed. |
