apparently when I was 3 years old, my baby sitter took me out for ice cream, then stopped to get gas. She got out of the car, locked the doors, without thinking, pumped the gas, paid for it, and then tried to get back into the car - only the keys were in the ignition.
Picture this poor woman trying desperately to convince me to unlock the door, while I sit and lick my ice cream cone, and giggle at the funny lady making faces outside the car.
The guy running the gas station eventually helped her out with a coat hanger - but you can't *always* convince the kid to help you :)
As for getting out and carrying the child - that's not always feasible - you're not going to take the kids out of the car if you are getting gas. And most of the time they're in the back seat, so it's possible that you could get out, and lock the keys in the car before you get the child(ren) out. Also, when you are coming *back* to the car, usually you put the kids in the car, THEN unload the groceries - again, a prime time to have put the keys down, the doors are locked, and the kids inside.
no...I don't have kids :) but I had younger brothers.
