you'll only be able to re-build the array on an identicle controller, which you may not be able to get. Software raid, you can bash those drives into any computer with enough connectors, hit the re-build array button in the management software, and BANG, you got your data back. Hardware controllers are for stuff that need to move fast. software raid is for importaint data.
