Morning Drive Excitement by carthax2005-08-09 06:46:49
My thoughts: by ChuckAB 2005-08-09 08:29:47
Never, EVER make it look like you're slamming on the breaks in front of a large vehicle like an 18-wheeler unless you have a valid reason IN FRONT OF YOU. As close as they may be following you, remember that 80,000 pounds just does not dodge or slow down quickly at highway speeds. And since they're a good 6 - 8 feet higher than you, they can see what's in front of them AND you. If possible, move to the right lane and let them pass. "Flashing" your break lights gives them no information on just how hard you're hitting the breaks - all it does is make them anxious and what follows depends on their temperment.

Are you doing the speed limit and they still want to go faster? Let them. Move over. The law does NOT say "move right unless you're at the speed limit" - it says "slower traffic move right". If you're moving 55MPH in a 45MPH zone and someone wants to pass - let them. They'll be your scout for any radar traps ahead and while the police are busy with them, you slide by!

Bottom line: Stressful situations like tailgating are bad enough without making it worse with threatening moves. The key is "Defensive" driving. There are enough "Offensive" drivers out there without us making it worse.

Me? Yeah - I've made a couple of situations worse than they had to be. Luckily my vehicles didn't get scratched and my nose didn't get broken. I'm not willing to take that chance any more. If they want to be an accident waiting to happen - be where you can WATCH - NOT where you're PART of it.
