Here's an interesting ARS bug: by LionsPhil 2005-08-09 01:47:12
* Go to an old page in ARS, just in case
* Go to make a new TLP or reply
* Put this in the subject line:
<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<
Or use greater-thans if you'd rather. It doesn't matter. Ampersands will probably work too.
* Preview as much as you like. You're within the subject length limit, right?
* Try to submit. You should get a "post unsuccessful" because the subject is now considered too long.

Theory: ARS is escaping the angle brackets *after* counting the subject line length for preview but *before* counting the length for submit.

Alternate theory: It's always *before*, but ARS doesn't actually check the subject length during preview: it just cuts it. (The browser can't be relied upon to do this -- not least, it wouldn't put the "(n/t)" on.)

Alternate theory 2: ARS isn't checking the length at all -- it's reporting the error because the _database_ is barfing at the newly lengthened string.
