I'm not deliberately trying to be antagonistic, but many people do have enormous, enormous contempt for emotional illness, possibly because they think the person can somehow control their condition, possibly because they think it's some kind of pose or scheme for attention. There's also the common misconception that depression is the same thing as being down in the dumps or blue. It's not in the same universe. Anybody who goes so far as to attempt suicide or think about it cannot be of sound mind (except in the cases of terminally ill people in severe pain, IMO). The very idea of ending your life is one completely at odds with sane decision making.
