Ah, but the tofu and eggplant was good. In fact, for Food Court food, it was unbelievable. The spices were delicate, the eggplant was not at all bitter, and the overall impression was of a gourmet meal served on a styrofoam plate.
And that's why Chun Yao's House of Tofu was hated vehemently by the other Food Court restaurants.
Mario Andropolous from the Pita Grill swore that one day he'd have Chun Yao out of the mall. Lenny Bath from the KFC franchise tried to pretend he didn't care, but the fan he installed at the cash register didn't cool the servers, it blew greasy chicken smells directly at the lineup of the House of Tofu. That didn't do any good. The people who tried Chun Yao's food didn't go elsewhere...why would they? It was wonderful and the jealousy and envy was almost visible across the linoleum-covered tables and almost tangible in the feel of the red and brown plastic food trays.
The day that Mario blew his cool and charged over there, pushing aside faithful patrons...well, that was a day to remember. Chun Yao just stodd a few feet back and smiled his enigmatic smile, confident that Mario couldn't do a thing. Mario yelled and spat his garlic-scented spittle, occasionally lapsing into Greek words that no one else at the mall knew, and eventually grabbed the box of straws next to the cash register and threw it at Chun Yao.
Chun Yao stopped smiling. He didn't change his face to a scowl, and didn't show anger as he knocked the remaining straws from his smock onto the floor. It was the only time any of us saw Chun stop smiling, and suddenly all of us were too busy to keep watching.
I know that Mario went back to his own cash register then. I know that Chun Yao didn't make a move against Mario.
I just don't know how Mario disappeared, and I don't know how anyone could eat the Hummus-flavoured tofu at Chun Yao's House of Tofu. Even the scent of it wafting across the Food Court is enough for me to get shivers up my spine.
My restaurant is the Submarine Stop. You'll find coupons for Chun Yao's House of Tofu in a box beside my cash register. No sense taking chances. |
