and I have lived there long enough to know what roads to avoid at what times (like the beltway except at 10 PM on a Tuesday). Yeah, traffic is bad in the DC area. But not as bad as Joisey. :P

The population in NoVA has grown ridiculously over the past 15 or so years and the roads haven't really kept up with it down there. However, NJ is the most densely populated state in the country, and the roads are all ancient, twisty and nowhere near able to hold the capacity of the traffic they are forced to bear. Additionally, many of the local roads have active RR crossings, in pretty crowded, heavily trafficked areas, and the freight trains run at inconvenient times, bringing food and supplies into Manhattan.
