Skype is free for skype-to-skype calls, you can still make regular dialup calls to non-skype customers at a reasonable cost that varies upon the country you are calling. The more popular calls (UK, US, Canada and others) is in the neighborhood of $0.024(US) per minute. Full details are available at skype.com. Keep a cell phone or landline for local calls of course. The best thing about Skype is it is a free download and there is no commitment. A friend tried Vonage for a short while. They provide a modem which was constantly problematic. When she cancelled, they told her she could keep the modem. She promptly tossed it.
