I guess it would help more if the chain of command got into the act more. Maybe I just assume people should be more self reliant and not expect everything to be handed to them. I personally do not come from a historically military family so when I joined the Army and saw combat, I had to devise my own rules for reintegrating myself into civilian life.
After combat, I confined myself to base for a month to get used to being in an environment where shooting was not an everyday fact of life. After that month I would visit the shooting ranges on base to get used to hearing shots not fired in anger. It does take time to break yourself of the habits associated with the noise of gunfire.
Once I got to the point that I could hear gunshots and not instinctively react to them as a hostile situation I then allowed myself to travel off base again.
I definatly agree that soldiers need a time after returning to de-combat themselves. You cannot just flip a switch and cease being in combat mode. The military knows this and already applies it when putting someone into a combat situation. A soldier new to a combat area is exposed to it slowly and in limited scope until the chain of command feels that he is ready to handle the situation without getting himself and his fellow soldiers killed.
Hopefully we will convince the higher ups in the chain of command to do something to help reintegrate soldiers returning from combat. |
