Impromptu disinfectant: what would you use? by Esteis2005-08-04 08:52:02
Probably alcohol, but if you have any bleach, that by Arman X 2005-08-04 09:18:20
is the absolute best. My wife did an experiment in a biology class with a bunch of different cleaners, and the only one that killed most (if not all) of the buggers was bleach. (Disinfectanat) alcohol did fairly well, as did the drinking variety...

The soda might have a minimal impact, but it would be such a low dose that it probably wouldn't kill much.

Salt isn't a disinfectant, especially kitchen salt. Unless you're killing slugs.

Thus, I would say the alcohol would be the most effective; whether any of them would be hurtful depends on what you're disinfecting. For example, if you're washing off a cut knee, none of them would hurt you, unless you used an inordinate amount. However, if you're trying to disinfect a fishtank, the alcohol would probably be a bad idea, the salt might kill them (especially if they're freshwater fish), and the soda might push the pH too high.
