Innocent is the wrong word, you're right. I mean, he definitely did it. But I think (in addition to the whole "blood oath" thing) Dumbledore asked him to do it. Any number of possible reasons - to save Draco from having to, to force Harry to action, because Dumbledore's plan involves being dead... it really doesn't matter.

I just think Rowling likes Snape too much to have him really be "the bad guy," and likes Dumbledore too much to not have it be his plan.
