Ok it's not a perfect solution, but if you (a) have a floppy drive and (b) use it as much as I do, it might not be too inconvenient to have a Linux floppy permanently hanging out of it for when you need it. Lilo will happily start from a floppy then continue the boot process from the hard disc, and I think Grub can do the same. That way you can leave the hard drive's boot sector free for WXP.

Other suggestions: Use Lilo instead of Grub (Grub's preferred these days but Lilo's always worked for me); try a live CD or just another distibution; ditch WXP. ;o)
