The device, \Device\Harddisk0\D, has a bad block. by BaruMonkey 2005-08-04 00:32:18
1) Computer's been acting a bit funky with the video display lately.
2) Put a large strain on the CPU cycles for a long time.
3) Click Start --> Turn Off --> Restart.
a) computer shuts down
b) computer turns back on
c) after the POST, screen goes dark and HDD stops churning (though it is still silently spinning)
4) Don't Panic

5) Bring HDD to friend's computer, set up as slave drive, copy over any files that were not backed up yet
6) Bring HDD home, plug it in, turn it on
c) (same as above)
d) Repeat step 6) until I'm convinced it's broke
7) On next startup, spam-press the F8 key, open Windows on Safe Mode with Networking(which is where I am now)
8) Look under "Computer Management/SystemTools/EventViewer/System"
9) Red x item that catches my eye: "The device, \Device\Harddisk0\D, has a bad block."

10)???

P.S. -
Computer will still not start unless in Safe Mode
HDD = 40GB, made by MDT
OS = WinXP Pro
