The Alpha-class Xg-1 Assault Gunboat came first, but in addition to being slow they weren't very cost-effective. So the Empire created the TIE Bomber (TIE\B). Only slightly faster than the Xg-1, the TIE Bomber features a unique double-hulled design. The wings are similar to those used in the TIE Advanced x1 prototype, though longer. The two hulls have many uses - the primary configuration has the second hull carrying a payload of warheads, but a variant called the TIE Shuttle could carry two passengers in the second hull instead.
The TIE Bomber's role could, of course, be filled by the TIE Defender (it's designed to be able to perform any starfighter task), but failing that the Empire didn't have anything better until Grand Admiral Thrawn commissioned the TIE Scimitar assault bomber. As fast as a TIE Starfighter, the Scimitar could carry four times the payload of a TIE Bomber and was equipped with shields. This was, of course, Grand Admiral Thrawn realizing that it was more effective to produce fewer ships that lasted longer than to replace the crappy ones constantly. Not to mention that pilots who survive their first two missions tend to (*gasp*) get better. |
