The TIE Advanced x1 was, of course, the first prototype incarnation of what eventually became the TIE Advanced (TIE\A) space superiority fighter. Vader's next ship after the Advanced x1 was damaged was the first release of the fully functional TIE Advanced. It had a very similar construction as the Advanced x1, except there were cutouts from the solar panels to improve visibility (and help control atmospheric yaw problems). The boosted dual laser cannon from the Advanced x1 was replaced by a pair of warhead launchers with a standard magazing of 2 missiles apiece, and upon the front wingtips (the verteces of the cutouts) were mounted a set of quad laser cannons. The hyperdrive was kept the same, but sublight speeds were increased beyond that of the Advanced x1. A set of relatively weak deflector shields was also added. Maneuverability was enanced by adding precision maneuvering jets to the rear wingtips. The only downgrade from Vader's original TIE Advanced x1 was the hull strength - to increase speed and maneuverability, much of the extra armor plating sported on Vader's ship was cast aside, but the shields compensated for this quite nicely. There was one last change made - the name "Advanced" was dropped in favor of the darker-sounding "Avenger".
Unfortunately, the Avenger never saw heavy deployment for two reasons. First of all, the primary production facility was destroyed. Second, the TIE Intercepter boasted almost identical performance (though it lacked shields, hyperdrive and warheads) and was far less expensive. Thus, the Interceptor became the next standard Imperial fighter and not the Avenger.
Sienar Fleet Systems' next project after the TIE Avenger was the TIE Defender, but it was kept very secretive. Grand Admiral Zaarin - who had also overseen the TIE Avenger project - was placed in charge of the project by the Emperor himself. Thinking that the power of the Defenders would give him an edge that would allow him to overthrow the Emperor, Zaarin went rogue and began attacking key Imperial facilities. Eventually the Emperor dispatched his prized tactician, Grand Admiral Thrawn, to deal with the traitor, and Zaarin was defeated. Because Zaarin had stolen most of the Defenders - and because of the prohibitive pricetag on the Defenders - they never became widespread. Instead, they were given to key figures like Vader and elite units like the 181st Imperial Fighter Group.
The TIE Defender is, realistically, the greatest starfighter ever produced. It outpaces the TIE\ln by 44% in spead and nearly 70% in maneuverability. The Interceptor-style wings were used, but they were arrayed in a set of three placed at 120° to each other, with the center one being on the dorsal side of the Defender. The same style of maneuvering jets and lasers from the Avenger were used, but there were (of course) half again as many jets and laser points, so the dorsal wing's guns were replaced with ion cannons instead of lasers. The warhead payload was doubled as well. Shields were increased to an unprecedented level, outmatching any other starfighter in production - the shield power is double that of an X-Wing. It may be the powerful shields which give the Defender its name, since it is actually more suited to swift attacks than defense of larger ships.
I may have left out a detail or two here and there, but I believe that should do for now. |
