It may not be the sensible thing to do. But panicking when people shout and point deadly weapons at you is quite a natural - and thus absolutely sane - reaction. Especially if you've never experienced such a situation before (which most people without a criminal record haven't, obviously). Evolution taught us three options to deal with a life-threatening situation: attack - flee - freeze. The first two are not appropiate when facing policemen. Unfortunately, evolution did not expect us to have to confront state authorities. These policemen may or may not be to blame. I don't understand why they coulnd't have shot his leg instead, but I wasn't there. Be that as it may, it's a sad state of the world, when general fear is strong enough for such a thing to happen...
