However, I've also encountered situations where some programmers have used vi with tabs, others have used emacs or editplus or other editors with tabs defined differently, some have used spaces for indentation, etc.

"Dog's breakfast" comes to mind. Thus, when I came across such weirdness, it was visually easier to track the open/close braces that were sitting on their own lines rather than the open on the end of a string of text.
