I tend to use if (x) if (y) a lot if x and y are long. I find two separate if statements more readable than a single line split down the middle to keep it to 80 character lines. I don't see any difference between the two in what intention they illustrate. I guess it's just a matter of style.

As for the rest, I agree with you. I just find the two-if statement version more readable/maintainable than the other.
