There's a new comparison either way. The compiler must, under both circumstances, test the left side of the '&&', then test the right side only if the left side is true. It cannot look at the right side until the left side is evaluated due to the sequence point implicit in the '&&', and it must treat them as separate comparisons and have separate jumps regardless of which way because of the short circuiting.
