Unexpected 'free' course: by Esteis 2005-06-17 17:20:28
I was intending to take 5 courses this semester; now it turns out that I probably won't get into one of them. Courses I had planned for later on during my studies are all unavailable; so I basically get a freebie, to choose something interest or tangentially relevant.

I'm an aspiring ecologist; intending to do a double major, the other one being in $humanities (history, prolly). What course would you recommend for ecology? Which would would you pick for yourself, out of interest? These are the ones I'm considering:
SSC 141 Human Geography:
I intend to do a 200-course which has this as an official prerequisite, but I've heard that it's a very boring and shallow course, easily picked up during the course of Development Studies.

HUM 142 Introduction to Philosophy:
Out of sheer interest. Humanities course. Lots of essay-writing.

HUM Introduction to Literature:
See description at philosophy.

SSC 162 The Principles of Economics:
An interesting field, that I know zilch about. I might use it in future development/ecology studies.

ACC 210 Methods & Statistics 200:
I already took the 100 (mandatory) and was god at it; I'm thinking the course would be useful for future academic pursuits. The course is mandatory for Social science majors, incidentally; I'll probably be the only one taking it voluntarily. I'll be able to hone my SPSS skillz0rz: I want to learn the scripting language.

SSC 241 Social and Economic Geography:
Basically, about spatial arrangement in western urban areas; my interest lies more with developing nations.
I'm basically using the board as a sounding board here; any comments are appreciated, it needn't be advice. Even if you say something about an aspect that interests you, that'll cast a light on the course from a new and useful angle, causing a better decision on my part. So chatter away!

Should you be really interested in the sort of things they teach at UCU, course outlines may be found at e.g. http://www.ucu.uu.nl/ssc241 (in the case of the social and economic geography course). Adjust URL according to course code.

Um. I just realised how tired I am; I should be sleeping really, not making important decisions. I'll checkback for replies tomorrow.
