...all the wonderful billboards for strip clubs and porn shops on said highway. Wonderful view when you're stuck in traffic there because said gravel truck tipped over. This is why I have zero sense of direction. The town I grew up in did not have streets on a north/south/east/west plot because the lakeshore screws things up. And then the highway system around is as you describe.
