Of course, the judicial system doesn't allow for citizens taking revenge on (defenseless ? ) criminals. But everyone "understands" the polices reaction too, and a counteraction may not carry the same "consent" at the moment. Are police like soldiers, should they be prepared to risk their life to uphold the formalities of justice, or only to uphold the intent of justice? But it IS a slippery slope.
