back in 99-00, they stopped every vehicle for ID check and destination. ALL of them. They opened van doors and trunks - cursory check but still a check. Plus you had to fill out a form and get a cardboard pass that had to be in the dashboard at all times while you were on base. This was all marine bases, admittedly, but I thought the security was rather reassuring. The worst one was Miramar. They were just... arrogant. Everyone else was polite and pleasant. We went to nearly every marine base in the US over the period of a year installing library computers and such.
