SIGH. I should NOT click things when I am tired by SciSSorS 2005-06-17 07:11:43
actually it's worse: I should not HAVE clicked those things, now I don't know any more where tolook.

The problem: Thomson SpeedTouch Ethernet modem (ADSL router I thought) won't connect me to the 'net any more.
I've been wasting hours, "looking around" now, but don't find the proper settings.

I had noted some stuff: the router's "static internal IP", the modem is supposed to have its own local DHCP server, so the LocalMachine 127.0.0.1 doesn't have a dhcp server. It should react to the modem, but at bootup Mandrake says
"starting eth0 --- failed"
... doesn't it get an IP from the modem?

Before a leave (about a week) I had disconnected all "hifi quality" hardware from electricalpower: radio, cd-player, computer, and yes: the thompson router-modem.
That last one seems to have been a mistake: plugging things back in, I didn't have ANY internet connection any more.
I'm not right in the mood for calling a 0900 helpline, which will stall (at half a euro per minute) only to repeat "that I don't have Linux support info here, sir"

That "automatic DHCP" LOOKS sosimple, but if it stops working, I don't know where to look any more.
