If you have large data transfers trying to get through, but the MTU isn't being adjust correctly it can appear as though you are connected fine, but nothing gets through. This is usually apparent when sending/receiving via Outlook, or when transferring large (>1MB) files. This issue can appear sporadically depending on ICMP filtering policies in place at the providers between yourself and the VPN headend.
