So, first I overslept. Woke up just fine when the alarm went off, but apparently blinking my eyes once took 1 whole hour. I didn't *have* to be anywhere on time, but still.
When I returned from the shower I had a voicemail from my boss, who (not completely wihtout reason) assumed I was already on my way to the campus. He had to take one of his kids the hospital so he wouldn't be in for a while. Could I please go in and check on the customers who had hired a bunch of meeting rooms. I have no problem with that, but felt uneasy because *if* something was not right, I would already be rather late.
Turned out on my arrival there was indeed a problem: according to a speaker his room was too small and hot (well, actually they cramped almost twice as much people into it than its capacity). Thankfully the receptionist had already arranged for them to use a much larger room, but now I had to offer them an appropriate beamer. For free. Without the ability to talk with my boss (no cellphones in the hospital) or even his boss (day off) first. That makes me uneasy as well.
Oh, and when that larger room was completely ready, the speaker (who still had 1 hour to go with his first group, and 1.5 with the next) just declared that it was too late now. At least the organisation seemed even more angry at him than I was.
Next, it turned out vandals had burnt down the on-campus IT shop last night. That's where (badly needed) extra memory for a server I co-admin was ordered just yesterday. So that'll take another while.
And to top it off, my laptop just doesn't get an IP address today. Helpdesk and I agree on the facts that the DHCP server does send a reply, that I don't have any firewall rules active, and that tcpdump doesn't show the reply coming in at my network interface. IT has in the past definitely had problems with routing and DHCP, but are unwilling to even consider this is the case now. Instead the packet must get lost somewhere between my hardware and tcpdump, and there's no explanation for all the broadcasts that *do* show up in tcpdump. And no explanation for the fact that my DHCP client does work inside a backend. Okay, I'll manage with an old desktop for today, and check again monday.
Seldom have I ever been more glad that it's a friday.

Oh and for those of you who wonder: the kid's all right. He just needs to be more careful around stairs :)
