It seems to me that the mem. cards are all fairly comparable - they should cost under $1USD / 10MB if you shop around. I get around 130 4Mpixel pics / 256MB card.

Batteries: my Canon's proprietary bat. and my wife's rechargeable AA's both last for more than one mem. card "usually", but you really want to be able to swap in a fresh set.

So, I wouldn't worry much about the mem. card format (unless you already have a bunch of cards; I have a CF investment). I would insist on interchangeable batteries, and I would lean towards AA batteries.
