Help? Copyright/permissions/etc. by threadjacker2005-06-17 00:32:47
If it's not for profit, by Didactylos2005-06-17 00:49:16

At least, not in the U.S.

Fair use has *NOTHING* to do with profit. Fair use is quoting part of an original work to comment on it, or for educational purposes (e.g. writing a paper). The operative words there are "part" and "comment" -- you can't copy the entirety of a work and then claim "fair use!", and you can't copy parts of a work and leave them on their own, you have to add something.

Profit doesn't come into copyright *LAW* at all. It does come into the punishment you receive in the resulting lawsuit -- if you made profit off the infringement, you'll be punished more than if you don't. But it's still illegal regardless.

threadjacker: Yes, contact the publisher, regardless of what you think. It can't hurt.
