At least, not in the U.S. Fair use has NOTHING to do with profit. Fair use is quoting part of an original work to comment on it, or for educational purposes (e.g. writing a paper). The operative words there are "part" and "comment" -- you can't copy the entirety of a work and then claim "fair use!", and you can't copy parts of a work and leave them on their own, you have to add something. Profit doesn't come into copyright LAW at all. It does come into the punishment you receive in the resulting lawsuit -- if you made profit off the infringement, you'll be punished more than if you don't. But it's still illegal regardless. threadjacker: Yes, contact the publisher, regardless of what you think. It can't hurt.
