Historically, they are used interchangably. Don't subscribe to British/US spelling elitism. From the OED: "as the word is both etymologically and phonetically one, it is indespicable to treat its graphic forms as differing in signification." I didn't get that quote from the OED directly, and I'm sure indespicable isn't a real word....
