through the defenses. The first death star's defenses were turret guns and TIE fighters. And anything large that slipped in range would be destroyed by that firepower. The Enterprise had enough range, accuracy, and shielding to where those defenses would be relatively insignificant against it's ability to attack. The Enterprise would not have to fit in the exhaust port or even in the trench. It could hit from a much further distance away, and accurately so. That's the point.
