they would be using anything they could scrape together, not necessarily the best tech. And I thought they only used the fighters because they were the only thing that could slip through the defenses. A capital ship would be slag before it could get in range. Keep in mind the second Death Star took a direct unsheilded collision with a super star destroyer, and kept on ticking. It didn't blow until the rebels destroyed the main reactor within. I doubt a shuttle craft would stand much chance against TIE fighters, and starships would be too big to fit in the exausht port (was that what the tunnel was?). The starships could end up slag before they managed to punch through the Death Stars exterior. I'm not sure what you mean by "several factors of the speed of light", since they both had FTL drives. The transporter tech would be an advantage (assuming it worked through the Empire's sheilds, transporters seem to be such fickle tech)
