Don't say "MacBeth" around theater people (n/t) by SnappingTurtle2005-05-17 15:41:18

is that you don't say MacBeth onstage, unless script-wise required to, inside a theatre where any show is currently running or in rehearsals. Between shows, i.e. after strike of one and before readthrough of another, an empty house, is okay. In such circumstances, it's "The Scotish Play."

Also, "break a leg" is better form to say to a performer than "good luck" before they go onstage. Has to do with rules of inverse-luck coming from good wishes or somesuch thing, or possibly stemming from age-old petty jealousies between performers which, when voiced, had opposite effects. The history, as with many things, is a mite fuzzy.
