Sorry DR but I can’t agree with you there. I think Newsweek needs to do more than just retract the article as the impact will be felt for a long time and will make life very hard for IO types world wide (take a look at my nick). However, I have seen enough to know that it is not a bad idea for the press to be looking over your shoulder from time to time.

Without good investigative journalism Nixon would not have left office, corrupt official types would still be having a heyday in Chicago and New York (or at least not having to be more circumspect about it.

Heck even Mi Li would not have received the attention it deserved if not for the press. That massacre being brought to the light of day, while embarrassing to the US in general and the Army in particular has saved an awful lot of lives. Military types are now trained on the laws of war. Cynical types might say that the military just does not want to be embarrassed again, but so what the effect is the same.
