Vichy. Besides the fact that they say something doesn't necessarily make it true. The article certainly inflamed people, but they were already pretty darn inflamed - can we really say the riots and deaths took place *only* because of Newsweek?

There was corroborating evidence of the underlying claim here, in that there were numerous accounts of Koran desecration from numerous sources. Add to that the apparent prior trustworthiness of the source, as compared to the multiple stains on the credibility of Curveball, including a German intelligence officer who said, "he's a fabricator and he's crazy." And can we guarantee that each and every claim based on Curveball was corroborated? Because the Germans don't think the "mobile bio-weapons labs" were, and the October 2002 National Intelligence Estimate says that one was "almost exclusively" a Curveball jobbie.
