Still, the point of that column stands. by Ravenlock 2005-05-17 10:30:16
Let's drop the "Lynch Newsweek" bull. Seventeen people have died in these riots. They didn't die because of anything Newsweek did -- the riots were caused by what our government has done.
She's entirely right. To use Newsweek's (yes, obviously very bad) journalistic screw-up to pat ourselves on the back and say, "Ha! Well, see there? Everything's fine, it's just those guys who hate America tripping us up" is foolish and arrogant.

That is to say, characteristic of modern American diplomacy in general.

Should someone at Newsweek be punished for printing something they couldn't back up? Of course. Should the story be retracted? Until there's some proof that such an offense occurred, yes.

Does that mean it didn't happen, or that offenses committed in Guantanamo and elsewhere on a regular basis don't provide the real fuel for the Muslim world's growing anger? Not hardly. But hey, people have been pointing that out since 9/11 without anyone listening, so why change course now? It's so much easier to blame those America-hating Americans.
