could be used as a means of publicly apologizing for particularly offensive behavior. I doubt, however, that it is often used as such. (That's just how cynical I am, I guess.)

All in all, our Mods do a d4mn fine job of keeping this community a pleasant place to visit, without choking free speach. But "free speach" does not entitle a person to freely and openly insult all and sundry -- there are consequences for offending your peers. Our Mods are the means by which those consequences are dealt, and also ameliorated (personally, I tend to be a lot stricter than the Mods -- once my temper snaps, I'm likeliest to decree "X is herewith disabled for Y amount of time," and not relent until said amount of time has passed, regardless of e-mails, apologies, or what-have-you. My only saving graces are a ridiculously long temper and a very strong empathy). Individually, each moderator has his or her own tone, but, collectively, they have historically been very consistent in their interpretation of the Forum FAQ and Rules and in their application of the same.

I have utterly zero complaints with how the moderators are doing their jobs.
