You may take Gods words as sacred by UnFair 2005-05-17 05:54:40
but writing isn't. The Koran for exemple is not holy to muslims, it is the text as such. And since the words of God come to the listeners directly and only in their language even the translation alters the meaning as much as the aging is altering the meaning because language changes with the time.

Using books to gain access to the meaning is what religious people do with their books if they are believers. Using the text literally is what fanatics do. Claiming that something becomes sacred just because it has a copie of text upon it that exists easily accessible in millions of places elsewhere is plain ridicolous. If it was done in artful way I consider it worthwhile no matter whether it is the first print of the bible, a beautyful illustrated kamasutra or a carpet with verses of the koran knotted within.
